Blogs vs. newspaper advertising: A comparison

(Editor's Note: More questions from potential clients about our services have prompted us to provide more information not only on what we do but how it is beneficial. Here's one look at how hiring a professional blogger stacks up against more traditional media or an old school website.)


Using a regularly edited blog to enhance your business's online presence will always bring better returns than a static website, even one that is updated regularly, because the volume of fresh content being added daily in the form of "posts" or articles is very attractive to search engines like Google.

Also, hiring a professional blogger is generally more cost effective than a prolonged advertising campaign in most traditional media like newspapers and here are some reasons why:

  • More for less. A look at [a local newspaper] rate card (attached) gives some idea of the expense of running even a single day full page add in black and white in the paper. (A special package price quoted to me recently went only as low as $1,524 a day for black & white if run on Saturday, Sunday or Monday.)
  • Reach the world on a budget. By comparison, our basic service costs just $300 a week and includes ten posts (two a day on business days Monday through Friday) of 70 to 300 words with additional photos and embedded video supplied by the client. (We can also create specialized photos and video for the client at an additional cost.) The copy can either be supplied by the client or created by us based on your specifications.
  • Target your customers. While newspaper and other traditional advertising (hopefully) reaches every subscriber in its regional coverage area, this includes those who might have little or no interest in your product or service. By contrast, a blog uses keywords to target specific readers. Depending on the type of business, a blog can create an audience more interested in what you have to offer whether locally or around the world.
  • Reinforce your brand. With regular daily posts, blogs can do more than simply alert customers to sales and drive them to your store or website for a special promotion. Over time, a blog gives your business authority in the marketplace ensuring that those in need of the goods and services you offer think of you first as a way to fill those needs.

Your blog also can feature a blogroll with links to up to 15 related sites and at least four related feeds which will help draw additional visitors potentially interested in your product or service to the site.
